The surgery was on a beating heart, without using a device to create artificial blood flow. The surgeons of the city cardio center were assisting. Two bypasses were put in, and the post-operative period (knock on wood!) is going well. Over 30 years of surgical practice Theresa Keiser had more than ten thousand cardiological surgeries of high degree of difficulty on working hearts with the survivability of patients at 98%. The level of development of cardiosurgery in Almaty was pleasantly surprising for Ms Keiser as before this visit she had thought that surgical interventions on heart in Kazakhstan were at their beginning developing stages. But bypass surgeries and stenting when there is a defect of blood flow Almaty city cardiological center surgeons have been doing since 2009. Usually the surgical intervention is done in emergency cases, when there is a myocardial infraction. The Head of the cardiosurgical department, candidate of medical sciences Adil Aitmukhanov says that there are special indications for each type of surgical intervention, but one way or another, the mortality of operated patients is five times less than when using conservative tactics of following them. 3,500 stenting surgeries and more than a thousand surgeries of putting in bypasses have been done in the department. Department surgeons also perform surgeries on acquired and congenital heart defects (prosthetics and plastics of heart valves) and electric cardiostimulator implantations.

It was the first time in the fall in Almaty that in a CIS country there was an official surgery done using new technologies for patients with heart problems. Starting from last year till now hearts were checked for more than 3,200 people in the City cardiological center.
